Greek localization and inflection: the case of short strings ambiguity

There are many issues that affect localization which have been mentioned in some detail in a previous post.

Quite often, major companies or major localization service providers, deliver lists of English strings that need to be localized (or reviewed, edited, QAed) in highly inflectional languages, the case with Greek.

What do we mean by inflectional language or inflection?

In grammar, inflection or inflexion is the modification of a word to express different grammatical categories such as tense, grammatical mood, grammatical voice, aspect, person, number, gender and case. Conjugation is the inflection of verbs; declension is the inflection of nouns, adjectives and pronouns.

Back to our case with Greek. The suffixes (and often the prefixes) of Greek nouns, Greek adjectives and Greek verbs (to mention but a few) change drastically depending on the above. Since Greek has three genders and English, well, none, there is no problem say, when we have a string like Custom—for the English language that is. In English it could refer to any setting (or settings) for any component (or components). In Greek however, the case is completely different. It could be any of the below, depending on the context:

For example, if we are talking about Settings (Ρυθμίσεις, in Greek, plural and feminine) it would be Προσαρμοσμένες. If we are talking about Setting (Ρύθμιση, in Greek, singular and feminine) it would be Προσαρμοσμένη.

To get an idea of the variety, refer to Microsoft translations:

A presentation within a presentation in which you group slides in an existing presentation so that you can show that section of the presentation to a particular audience.

Note how they change. And they change according to context.

Hence, there is no way for a localizer to localize correctly, or an editor to edit correctly, when presented with out-of-context strings like:

The question is: "Custom" what? "None" of what? "Time" as "12.34am" or as "10 minutes"?
You catch the drift.

QA of terminology

A few more examples can be derived from automated QA systems which check the text against a list of terms. Sometimes a term can be a very general word, like "of" for example. See this QA report:

What happens here is that it is taken for granted that the target language has no inflections whatsoever, which of course, is hardly the case.

100% matches and CAT pricing policies

Moreover, it is not fair to expect a translator not to be paid for 100% matches, or to be paid a lower rate, when these apparent "100% matches" need to be thorougly reviewed. Sometimes, the research that one has to do for single-word "100% matches" (i.e. searching in Help Files or running the non-localized version of the application) takes much more time than translating a full paragraph.

Εισαγωγή
Η συνδρομητική υπηρεσία λεξικών των in.gr / Ματζέντα παρέχει πρόσβαση σε 15 λεξικά (5 εκ των οποίων Αγγλικά<>Ελληνικά) με ετήσιο κόστος 19 ευρώ (με ΦΠΑ). Η υπηρεσία αντικαθιστά την προηγούμενη δωρεάν πρόσβαση στη Χρυσή έκδοση (Αγγλικά<>Ελληνικά) της Ματζέντα.

Σύνδεση στην υπηρεσία
Η σύνδεση στην υπηρεσία μπορεί να γίνει είτε από την αρχική σελίδα του in.gr, είτε από τη σελίδα του σελίδα του λεξικού. Σημειωτέον, όταν κάποιος δεν είναι συνδεδεμένος, εμφανίζεται και στη δεύτερη σελίδα το πλαίσιο εισαγωγής λέξης προς μετάφραση. Αφού κανείς πατήσει το Enter ή το κουμπί Μετάφραση, εμφανίζονται τα πεδία σύνδεσης χρήστη. Στην αρχική σελίδα του in.gr εμφανίζονται εξαρχής και τα πεδία σύνδεσης χρήστη.

Απομνημόνευση κωδικού πρόσβασης
Η απομνημόνευση κωδικού πρόσβασης λειτουργεί από τη σελίδα του λεξικού αν έχετε επιλέξει το πλαίσιο ελέγχου «Να παραμείνω συνδεδεμένος» αλλά δεν λειτουργεί από την αρχική σελίδα του in.gr (δεν υπάρχει επιλογή «Να παραμείνω συνδεδεμένος»). Έτσι, αν κλείσετε το πρόγραμμα περιήγησης και το ανοίξετε ξανά, η σύνδεση δεν θα διατηρηθεί και θα πρέπει να εισαγάγετε εκ νέου τα στοιχεία σύνδεσης (εκτός αν έχετε επιλέξει το πλαίσιο ελέγχου στη σελίδα του λεξικού).

Χρήση του «εισάγετε» αντί για «εισαγάγετε»
Ένα γλωσσικό σφάλμα που ακολούθησε την παλιά, δωρεάν, υλοποίηση του λεξικού έχει να κάνει με τη χρήση του «εισάγετε» σε μηνύματα όπως «Εισάγετε τη λέξη που θέλετε να μεταφράσετε» / «Εισάγετε λέξη (αγγλικά ή ελληνικά)» / «Αποτυχία σύνδεσης! Παρακαλούμε ελέγξτε ότι εισάγετε σωστά τα στοιχεία σας και προσπαθήστε ξανά.». Αν και δεν επηρεάζει την ποιότητα των λεξικών, ηχεί ως μία δυσαρμονική νότα σ’ ένα περιβάλλον όπου η γλωσσική ακρίβεια είναι εκ των ων ουκ άνευ.

Κόστος
Το κόστος της υπηρεσίας είναι 19 ευρώ (συμπεριλαμβανομένου ΦΠΑ) ετησίως. Αν αφαιρέσουμε το ΦΠΑ, είναι 15,45 ευρώ ετησίως. Το συνολικό κόστος των λεξικών, αν ήταν κάποιος να τα αγοράσει σε CD-ROM, είναι 492 ευρώ (με ΦΠΑ). Αυτό σημαίνει δηλαδή ότι θα μπορούσε να αγοράσει τα λεξικά με το κόστος της συνδρομής σε 30 περίπου χρόνια. Το κόστος των λεξικών για τα ζεύγη Αγγλικά<> Ελληνικά (αυτά δηλαδή που ενδιαφέρουν περισσότερο τον κόσμο) είναι 250 ευρώ (περίπου 13 χρόνια συνδρομής).

Περιορισμένη πρόσβαση χωρίς συνδρομή

Ελεύθερη είναι η πρόσβαση σε όσα λήμματα ξεκινούν από α (ή a για τις άλλες γλώσσες).

Πλεονεκτήματα της συνδρομητικής υπηρεσίας
Κατ’ αρχάς δίνει τη δυνατότητα, από οποιοδήποτε υπολογιστή και χωρίς εγκατάσταση λογισμικού, να έχει κανείς πρόσβαση σε μια σωρεία σημαντικών, γενικών και ειδικών, λεξικών, καλύπτοντας τις σημαντικότερες ευρωπαϊκές γλώσσες: Αγγλικά, Γαλλικά, Ιταλικά, Γερμανικά.

Ένα πλεονέκτημα σε σχέση με την προηγούμενη, δωρεάν, υλοποίηση της «Χρυσής έκδοσης» (Αγγλοελληνικό) είναι ότι στην τωρινή μορφή της συμπεριλαμβάνει και το υπολεξικό πληροφορικής, 22.000 όρων, που δεν υπήρχε πριν παρά μόνο στο CD-ROM. Εννοείται φυσικά, ότι έχουν προστεθεί και άλλα λεξικά. Ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό μεταξύ αυτών, και δυστυχώς όχι εξίσου γνωστό στο ευρύ κοινό, είναι και το Αγγλικό-Ελληνικό-Αγγλικό Ιδανικό για Αγγλόφωνους, το οποίο περιέχει ακόμη πλουσιότερο λημματολόγιο από τη «Χρυσή Έκδοση». Από την άλλη πλευρά απουσιάζει από τα λεξικά το «απλό» Αγγλοελληνικό (αυτό που είχε εκδώσει η Ματζέντα σε CD-ROM πριν τη «Χρυσή Έκδοση» τουΠαναγιώτη Τσαμπουνάρα).

Ευχρηστία
Είναι φανερό ότι στη νέα διαδικτυακή υλοποίηση έγινε μια απόπειρα αναπαραγωγής, στα βασικά στοιχεία της λειτουργικότητας, του λογισμικού «Εξερευνητής Λεξικών» της Ματζέντα. Αυτό επιτυγχάνεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό με τη χρήση τεχνολογίας Ajax. Τα βασικά πλεονεκτήματα της τεχνολογίας Ajax είναι ότι δεν απαιτείται φόρτωση νέας σελίδας για εμφάνιση κάποιων πληροφοριών, δίνοντας αίσθηση εφαρμογής τοπικού υπολογιστή. Τα μειονεκτήματα του Ajax είναι ότι δεν υπάρχει ιστορικό στο πρόγραμμα περιήγησης, πράγμα το οποίο θα ήταν δυνατό να προβλεφθεί προγραμματιστικά με την προσθήκη λειτουργίας ιστορικού· ωστόσο, δεν υπάρχει στην αρχική αυτή υλοποίηση. Επίσης, για τα Σχετιζόμενα / Συνώνυμα λήμματα (που εμφανίζονται στο τέλος των μεταφράσεων κάποιων λημμάτων) γίνεται φόρτωση νέας σελίδας.

Ένα από τα σημαντικότερα προβλήματα της διεπαφής είναι ότι όταν πληκτρολογεί κάποιος μια λέξη, εκτελεί την αναζήτηση, και μετά αλλάζει λεξικό για να δει πώς μεταφράζεται σε αυτό, η λέξη αναζήτησης εξαφανίζεται και πρέπει να την πληκτρολογήσει ξανά. Μπορείτε να δείτε πώς ακριβώς συμβαίνει αυτό στο βίντεο της δοκιμής. Μια πρόχειρη λύση για αυτό το ζήτημα είναι, αφού πληκτρολογήσετε τη λέξη, να την αντιγράψετε, και, μετά την αλλαγή του εκάστοτε λεξικού, να την επικολλήσετε (Ctrl+C για αντιγραφή και Ctrl+V για επικόλληση).

Επίσης, κάποια λεξικά, όπως η «Χρυσή Έκδοση» έχουν διπλά λήμματα (π.χ. για ρήμα και για ουσιαστικό). Σε αυτήν την περίπτωση, ο χρήστης ίσως χρειαστεί να κάνει κλικ και στο παρακάτω λήμμα για να βρει τις μεταφράσεις που αναζητά.

Πηγαίνοντας αυτό το στοιχείο της λειτουργικότητας ένα βήμα παραπέρα, θα ήταν ιδιαίτερα ευχάριστο αν η αναζήτηση ενός όρου εμφάνιζε αποτελέσματα από όλα τα λεξικά ταυτόχρονα ή από όλα τα λεξικά ενεργού γλωσσικού ζεύγους. Επίσης, θα προσέδιδε ακόμη περισσότερη ευχρηστία αν τα διπλά λήμματα εμφανίζονται ως ένα, π.χ. οι μεταφράσεις για το ουσιαστικό πρώτα και οι μεταφράσεις για το ρήμα ακριβώς από κάτω στο ίδιο τμήμα του παραθύρου. Βέβαια, αυτό είναι στοιχείο που διακρίνει τη βάση δεδομένων και ισχύει και για την έκδοση σε CD-ROM· υπάρχουν δε αναζητήσεις που εμφανίζουν πάνω από δύο λήμματα. Π.χ. στη «Χρυσή Έκδοση» η αναζήτηση για τη λέξηtest θα μας βγάλει τρία ξεχωριστά λήμματα: ένα για το ρήμα, ένα για το ουσιαστικό και ένα από το υπολεξικό πληροφορικής. Αντίθετα, δεν ισχύει εδώ ο χαρακτηρισμός των αποτελεσμάτων με εικονίδια θεματικού πεδίου όπως γίνεται με το λογισμικό Εξερευνητής Λεξικών (έκδοση σε CD-ROM).

Επίσης, κάποιες φορές ίσως θέλει κάποιος να αντιγράψει όρους από τη γλώσσα-πηγή, πράγμα το οποίο δεν είναι δυνατό.

Μια επιπλέον λειτουργικότητα που θα μπορούσε να προστεθεί, είναι να μπορούν οι χρήστες να εκτελούν αναζήτηση με ένα κλικ μιας λέξης από το διαδίκτυο ή τον τοπικό υπολογιστή τους. Για διαδικτυακές εφαρμογές υπάρχει κώδικας JavaScript που παρέχει αυτή τη δυνατότητα, ενώ για εφαρμογή αναζήτησης μέσω τοπικού υπολογιστή μπορεί να γίνει κάτι αντίστοιχο με προσθήκη κάποιων στοιχείων στο μενού δεξί κλικ των Windows μέσω μιας επέκτασης.

Προβλήματα κωδικοποίησης

Ορισμένα γλωσσικά ζεύγη παρουσιάζουν προβλήματα κωδικοποίησης. Αυτά είναι τα γενικά λεξικά Γαλλικά<>Ελληνικά, Ιταλικά<>Ελληνικά, Γερμανικά<>Ελληνικά.

Το φαινόμενο βέβαια δεν είναι καινούριο. Υπάρχει από την εποχή του Πολυλεξικού της Ματζέντα και ο λόγος είναι ότι η βάση δεδομένων δεν ήταν κωδικοποιημένη σε UTF-8 αλλά σε κωδικοποιήσεις δυτικών χωρών και ελληνικής αντίστοιχα.

Στα παραδείγματα βλέπεται τη γερμανική λέξη abfärben η οποία εμφανίζεται ως abfδrben. Αν, ωστόσο, αναζητήσουμε την ελληνική λέξη «ξεβάφω» η κωδικοποίηση της γερμανικής θα εμφανιστεί σωστά.

Τέτοια προβλήματα μπορούν να λυθούν είτε με πλήρη μετατροπή βάσης σε Unicode είτε με εντολές iconv μέσω php. Π.χ. iconv -x ISO-8859-1 -y UTF-8.

Προσβασιμότητα
Η δυνατότητα χρήσης πλήκτρων πρόσβασης για βελτίωση της προσβασιμότητας, π.χ. βελάκια για μετακίνηση σε επόμενο / προηγούμενο λήμμα στη λίστα των λημμάτων που βρέθηκαν ή με συνδυασμό με Alt για μετακίνηση στο επόμενο / προηγούμενο λεξικό και εμφάνιση αποτελεσμάτων αναζήτησης της ίδιας λέξης θα ήταν μια ιδιαίτερα ευχάριστη προσθήκη για τους προχωρημένους χρήστες ή για τους χρήστες με προβλήματα προσβασιμότητας.

Φορητές συσκευές
Καθώς είμαστε στην εποχή των φορητών συσκευών (κινητά, ταμπλέτες, κτλ.), καλό θα ήταν να υπήρχε κάποια εφαρμογή (applet) για εύκολη πρόσβαση / αναζήτηση μέσω κινητών (τουλάχιστον για κινητά Android και για iPhone). Βέβαια, η «Χρυσή Έκδοση» της Ματζέντα υπάρχει ως εφαρμογή για το iPhone (κόστος 9,99 δολάρια) και από όσο γνωρίζω ετοιμάζεται και η εφαρμογή για Android (και στις δύο περιπτώσεις για πρόσβαση offline). Αντίστοιχα, το in.gr διαθέτει εφαρμογές για πρόσβαση από κινητά στο ειδησεογραφικό του περιεχόμενο. Ίσως θα μπορούσαν οι υπάρχουσες εφαρμογές να καλύψουν και τη λειτουργία των λεξικών.

Σε δοκιμή με χρήση κινητού Samsung Galaxy S (Android, ανάλυση 480 x 800 pixel) η πρόσβαση ήταν απρόσκοπτη με το πρόγραμμα περιήγησης του Android. Ωστόσο, καθώς δεν υπάρχει σχετική εφαρμογή, πρέπει κανείς να «τσιμπάει» την οθόνη για να φτάνει στην επιθυμητή μεγέθυνση, καθιστώντας την αναζήτηση δύσχρηστη.

Με τη δυνατότητα φωνητικής αναγνώρισης που προσφέρουν κάποια λειτουργικά συστήματα για κινητά αυτή η υπηρεσία μπορεί να γίνει ακόμη πιο εύχρηστη για τους χρήστες κινητών.

Συμπέρασμα
Η συνδρομητική υπηρεσία λεξικών των in.gr / Ματζέντα είναι μια ιδιαίτερα χρήσιμη προσθήκη στο οπλοστάσιο του μεταφραστή. Δίνει τη δυνατότητα, από οποιοδήποτε υπολογιστή και χωρίς εγκατάσταση λογισμικού, να έχει κανείς πρόσβαση σε μια σωρεία σημαντικών, γενικών και ειδικών, λεξικών. Το λογισμικό μεταβαίνει με ραγδαίο ρυθμό στη μορφή της υπηρεσίας (SaaS) και η παρούσα υλοποίηση είναι σαφέστατα σημείο των καιρών.

Θα θέλαμε, επειγόντως, να δούμε εφαρμογή για πρόσβαση από κινητές συσκευές, καθώς ολοένα και περισσότεροι άνθρωποι χρειάζονται αυτού του είδους τις πληροφορίες όταν βρίσκονται μακριά από τον προσωπικό τους υπολογιστή.

Το κόστος του δεν είναι σε καμία περίπτωση απαγορευτικό (ιδίως για επαγγελματίες οι οποίοι γλυτώνουν το ΦΠΑ) ωστόσο, σε μια αγορά η οποία έχει συνηθίσει στη δωρεάν παροχή περιεχομένου, η συνδρομή των 19 ευρώ είναι, πώς να το κάνουμε, δύσπεπτη. Αν συνυπολογίσουμε και τους ενδοιασμούς του μέσου Έλληνα χρήστη για αγορές μέσω Διαδικτύου, το θέμα γίνεται ακόμη πιο δύσκολο (ωστόσο, προσφέρεται η δυνατότητα πληρωμής με κατάθεση σε τραπεζικό λογαριασμό). Ίσως θα μπορούσε να υπάρχει μια εναλλακτική, φτηνότερη, συνδρομή μόνο για τα Αγγλικά λεξικά (γενικής ύλης ή και ειδικευμένα) που ενδιαφέρουν και τον πολύ κόσμο.

How to sort rows on the basis of whether they contain a specific word/string

Lets say you have a glossary in 2 columns (A and B) and you want to check all the cells that refer you to another headword with the string see x. or βλέπε or even a specific character like a parenthesis. Let's say you want to check for instances of this string on column B with all the rows that contain the given string.

1. In column C, header row (C1), enter the phrase/string/character to find.
2. In C2 enter =ISNUMBER(SEARCH(C$1; B2)) and then drag C2 all the way down (if that gives you an error try with this: =ISNUMBER(SEARCH(C$1, B2)) ).
3. If you dragged, you will see that column C cells change to TRUE or FALSE.
4. Sort on column C.
5. Go to the bottom where you will most likely find all the cells that contain the phrase/string/character.

If you want to check for a term on column A, use this instead:

=ISNUMBER(SEARCH(C$1; A2)) or =ISNUMBER(SEARCH(C$1, A2))

Trados suggestion: Automatic term replacement and case change when opening a translation unit

The following is an idea I submitted to Trados. Feel free to vote it. It is a pity that the market leader is well behind functionality than other tools (i.e. DVX and Metatexis fully support this with a multitude of case adaptation options).

Currently, one needs to insert a term manually, either by a shortcut/clicking on Trados Suite 2007 or by entering first characters in Trados Studio 2009. The other option would be to enable term replacement when pretranslating. However, this is hardly ideal as one cannot benefit to the same extent with matches that will be created during the translation process and it will require extra work.

Also, when terms are replaced, there should be options whether the case should change following the source text. I.e. if my term is *Printer* and its translation is *Imprimante* whilst my source text is *Turn off the printer* then it should automatically adapt case and output *Turn off the imprimante*.

1. Select the source term
2. Select the target term
3. Right click on any selected term and click on Add new term (or assign a shortcut for this via Tools - Options - Keyboard Shortcuts)
4. Click on the auto hide icon (only for the first time you add a term)
5. Click on the Save icon or F12 (for some reason F12 does not work for me and others as far as I know).
6. Move back to your text and continue translation (the add term pane will be hidden automatically).

Using the Autotext feature in Trados Studio 2009 SP1

This is the first of a series of notes with the intention of reviewing the new and old features, as well as the performance of the new version of SDL-Trados, Trados Studio 2009 SP1.

Autotext is a very handy feature and it feeds to the Autosuggest prompt. You can add manually entries (not recommended), import autoTxt files, import them from Trados TMs (the new format), or tmx files.
Let as see how easy it is to add entries manually. You click on Tools - Options - Autosuggest - Autotext. You select Target Language, you type or paste your term on the Auto Text entries box and when you are finished you click OK. This is great, but slow.

I would rather import from a list of entries which I might have exported from a different source or have stored in, say, word format. Do we know what format we need to use in order to import Autotext entries from a different source than those specified? No.

In order to find out what the format should be, I added manually a couple of entries and exported the file. It was a plain UTF-8 file with each entry occupying a single line. However, if you open the file in notepad, the line breaks are simply not there. I tried with different text editors like Notepad++ and EmEditor and it worked fine. Then I pasted my lines of entries and saved (always as UTF-8). Then imported the file.

Comments
1. When importing, duplicate entries are emptied automatically on the Autotext entries window (so far so good)
2. However, autotext entries are duplicated (no matter how you entered them) at insertion point.
3. When there are many Autotext lines starting with the same word, the system simply denies to produce them. The result is that you type the full text of an Autotext entry.
4. Duplicate entries are emptied automatically on the Autotext entries window, but are not emptied from the actual system database

Tryin to get Autotext entries to work by typing Υπουργείο... to no avail.

As you can see the other entries work fine

Deleting all entries (one by one - the only way offered by the system!) and leaving only a couple of them to see if the trigger forΥπουργείο... will work.

And the trigger works; however, although not a duplicate entry, produces a duplicate autotext line!

And here is the result. Again, duplication!

I keep adding them, and I see a scroll line appearing. This is good.

Now I add more Υπουργεία manually (adding the whole list again).

Surprise-surprise. Although in the list no duplicates appear, in the system's guts, duplicates and triplicates reside! So, every time I import terms, duplicates are in fact not emptied, although it appears to be so!

Toggle field codes in Word

Problem:
Word displays field codes (like this: {page\*mergeformat}) instead of interpreting them and displaying a proper hyperlink, page number, Table of Contents, etc.

Solution:
Select Tools -> Options -> View tab and uncheck the Field Codes box.
Also, Alt+F9 toggles field codes.

If you have 2 columns with data, say A and B. On column C, cell 1 enter =LEN(B1) if you want to count on the basis of the number of characters in column B, or =LEN(A1) if you want to count on the basis of the number of characters in column A.

After you enter that on the cell, press ENTER and then place the mouse on the corner of the cell and drag down to copy the formula.

Then select the column with the counts and click Sort.

The following is a query from a serious localization vendor:

I have a question for letter case for Greek language. Is it normal for Greek to follow the same letter case as English?

And, what's the letter case rule for Greek?

Unfortunately, following the English trend, many Greek translators and localizers tend to follow Title Case (even in cases when there are more than a couple of words, i.e. producing a whole sentence with the first letter of each word capitalized).

It should be made clear here, that the norm for Greek is Sentence case (Κεφαλαία-πεζά πρότασης) only and not Title Case (Γράμματα τίτλου).

So, this is Sentence case:

Translation memory and machine translation: MetaTexis

Now that an SDL-Trados version which supports MT (for limited file pairs) is due to be released anytime soon, I think it is worth remembering that there are applications which have had MT capabilities for years now.

One of them is MetaTexis. It gives you the option to choose between two online machine translation engines or you can use an application installed locally. The range of pairs is as big as those online engines (see the table below for an example).

So how does one use machine translation with MetaTexis?

❶ Click Alt+Shift+O to display the Document options dialog. Go to Machine Translation tab.
❷ Click on Google via internet. Click Set selected server active/inactive. Active should be displayed below the Status header.
❸ In Activity section select Translate every segment.
❹ In Results section, uncheck Show results in Scout and check Show in main translation box if empty.
❺ Click OK. Translate as you normally do.

Now you will see your translation units being automatically translated. You can edit them and commit them to the translation memory as you normally do with a translation memory match.

In the example below, you can see some text translated with MetaTexis and Google machine translation engine which I pasted from Jost Zetzsche's latest Tool Kit.

All Programs column too wide? Shorten program names...

Problem description

When you click Start, All Programs, the start menu appears in three columns. They appear too wide and program installations do not appear on the list. There seems to be a lot of empty space at the columns, i.e. the columns are too wide.

Why does it happen

The column width depends on the length of program names.

Remedies

❶Right click each program and select rename [F2] and shorten the name. I.e. a common culprit is MATZENTA - GOLDEN VERSION 2006 English-Greek-English Dictionary, change it to Magenta - Gold. You will have much narrower columns, thus room for more columns.

You can mass change program names easily by going to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and changing long names on that list.

❷You can group similar programs in a folder, so as to have fewer individual programs listed. For ex: if you have 5 different dictionaries listed individually on programs menu you can make one folder called Dictionaries and put the shortcuts to each one in the new folder. You'll have one extra click to access them, but you'll have room for lots more programs on the All Programs menu.

❸Right click on the Start button, select Properties, Customize then Advanced. Scroll down the list and select Scroll programs. The programs will be in a single line. If you want to put them into alphabetical order, right click on one entry then select Sort by name.

Don't break his heart – Μην του ραγίσεις την καρδιά, είναι κάτι που βλέπουμε σε πολλές παραλλαγές σε υπότιτλους (συνήθως τα συμφραζόμενα έχουν να κάνουν με ερωτική σχέση ή δυνητική ερωτική σχέση). Φυσικά, εάν λέγαμε «σπάω» κάποιου την καρδιά θα ήταν εντελώς ατυχής σύναψη και δεν θα μιλήσω περαιτέρω γι' αυτό καθώς το θεωρώ προφανές.

Ωστόσο, στην καθομιλουμένη, δύσκολα φαντάζομαι έναν Έλληνα ή μια Ελληνίδα να λέει: «Μην του ραγίσεις την καρδιά» καθώς ακούγεται κάπως μελοδραματικό, λογοτεχνικό και αφύσικο για καθημερινό, ρέοντα λόγο.

Πολύ πιο φυσιολογικό θα ήταν να έλεγε: «Μην τον πληγώσεις».

Σε όσους είχε τύχει να δώσουν κείμενά τους προς έκδοση, είναι ιδιαίτερα πιθανό να έχουν προσέξει μια σειρά προβλημάτων που ανακύπτουν από τη στιγμή που το κείμενό τους περνάει από το Word στο εκάστοτε σελιδοποιητικό πρόγραμμα (συνήθως στην Ελλάδα QuarkExpress).

Ένα από αυτά τα φαινόμενα, τα οποία πλήττουν όχι μόνο τους ερασιτέχνες αλλά και τους επαγγελματίες του χώρου, είναι το φαινόμενο των διπλών διαστημάτων και της απώλειας των χαρακτήρων άνω τελείας.

Ξεκινώντας με τα διπλά διαστήματα, ένας απλός τρόπος να γλυτώσουμε από δαύτα είναι από το Word να κάνουμε Εύρεση/Αντικατάσταση (Ctrl+H) πατώντας δύο φορές το διάστημα στην Εύρεση και μια στην Αντικατάσταση και να επαναλάβουμε τη διαδικασία μέχρι να μη γίνεται καμία αντικατάσταση.

Στη συνέχεια περνάμε το αρχείο στο σελιδοποιητικό πρόγραμμα και λογικά δεν πρέπει να έχει άλλα διπλά διαστήματα. Μερικές φορές όμως, ως δια μαγείας, όχι μόνο έχει διπλά διαστήματα, αλλά φαίνεται σαν να λείπουν κόμματα, τελείες, κάπως να μην υπάρχει ειρμός.

Τι συμβαίνει; Τα σελιδοποιητικά προγράμματα αντιμετωπίζουν κάποια προβλήματα με την εισαγωγή κάποιων (παλιο)χαρακτήρων. Σε αυτούς συγκαταλέγονται οι χαρακτήρες που χρησιμοποιούνται συνήθως ως άνω τελεία.

Και γιατί λέω χαρακτήρες; Διότι ως άνω τελεία χρησιμοποιούνται τουλάχιστον δύο χαρακτήρες. Ο πρώτος είναι η επίσημη άνω τελεία και ο δεύτερος η αγγλική μεσαία τελεία (middle dot), η οποία εμφανίζεται εάν πατήσουμε και κρατήσουμε πατημένο στο Word το Alt και στη συνέχεια το 0183. Εδώ βλέπετε τη διαφορά... ύψους. Το πρώτο είναι μεσαία τελεία και το δεύτερο άνω τελεία (•·): «μεσαία τελεία•» «άνω τελεία·». Για να βγει η «πραγματική» άνω τελεία πατάμε 0387 και μετά Alt+X. (Δηλαδή πατάμε [μηδέν τρία οκτώ επτά] και στη συνέχεια Alt+X [κρατώντας πατημένο το Alt ενώ πατάμε το X]).

Ένας άλλος τρόπος είναι να εγκαταστήσουμε το πολυτονικό πληκτρολόγιο και να χρησιμοποιήσουμε τον συνδυασμό πλήκτρων Alt (δεξί)+Shift+]. Πρέπει βέβαια να την υποστηρίζει και η γραμματοσειρά. Π.χ. η Times New Roman την υποστηρίζει.

Ένας ακόμη τρόπος είναι πηγαίνοντας στο Insert -> Symbol και επιλέγοντας το αντίστοιχο σύμβολο. Σε αυτό το επίπεδο μπορούμε επίσης να κάνουμε αντιστοίχιση μιας συντόμευσης πληκτρολογίου.

Και ένας επιπλέον τρόπος είναι με τη δυνατότητα Αυτόματης διόρθωσης (Autocorrect). Π.χ. πηγαίνουμε Tools -> Autocorrect options και στο Replace γράφουμε ,. και στο With κάνουμε επικόλληση την άνω τελεία.

Τώρα, εάν θέλουμε οι χαρακτήρες που έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί ως άνω τελείες να περάσουν σωστά στο σελιδοποιητικό πρόγραμμα, έχουμε να κάνουμε μια σειρά από διαδικασίες.

Πρώτον, να εξασφαλίσουμε ότι όλα τα σύμβολα που χρησιμοποιούνται εν είδει άνω τελείας έχουν μετατραπεί σε σύμβολο άνω τελείας. Για να γίνει αυτό πρέπει να κάνουμε Εύρεση (Chtl+H) όλων των περιπτώσεων μεσαίας τελείας και Αντικατάσταση με άνω τελεία.

Το πρόβλημα βέβαια εδώ είναι ότι εάν απλά επιλέξουμε τη μεσαία τελεία και την κάνουμε επικόλληση στο πεδίο εύρεσης, το Word απλά δεν θα τη βρίσκει. Για να μπορέσει να τη βρει πρέπει στο πεδίο εύρεσης να γράψουμε χρησιμοποιώντας τον κωδικό χαρακτήρα (character code) σε αυτή τη μορφή ^0183 έχοντας επιλεγμένο το πλαίσιο Use Wildcards και στην Αντικατάσταση κάνουμε επικόλληση την ελληνική άνω τελεία.

Αφού εκτελέσουμε αυτή την αλλαγή και βεβαιωθούμε ότι όλοι οι χαρακτήρες που χρησιμοποιούνται ως άνω τελείες είναι άνω τελείες, κάνουμε μια επιπλέον αλλαγή και μετατρέπουμε όλες τις άνω τέλειες σε ένα σύμβολο που δεν χρησιμοποιείται στο κείμενό μας. Εγώ π.χ. χρησιμοποιώ συνήθως το καγκελάκι (#). Κάνουμε επομένως εύρεση της άνω τελείας και αντικατάσταση με το καγκελάκι.

Στη συνέχεια, αφού γίνει εισαγωγή στο σελιδοποιητικό πρόγραμμα, κάνουμε αντικατάσταση του χαρακτήρα για το καγκελάκι, με την άνω τελεία.

Many people seem to manually add the files in each folder/subfolder when they receive big projects with complex and deep file structure. This can take an inordinate amount of time but there is a simple trick to save you all the hustle. I have tried to illustrate this procedure with a number of screen shots.

1. Click on the Window button (bottom left of the keyboard, next to Ctrl) and E to open Windows Explorer.

2. Navigate to the main folder of your translation project and click on the main folder.

3. Click on the Search button (on top, next to the Folders button). In What do you want to search for dialog click on All files and folders

4a. If searching for rtf documents in the All or part of the file name field enter *.rtf
4b. If searching for rtf documents and ttx documents in the All or part of the file name field enter *.rtf *.ttx

5. Click on Search below. The files will appear on the right pane.

6. Resize the Windows Explorer Window and bring it on the right side

7. Run Trados Translators Workbench

8. Click Tools-> Analyse (or Translate or Clean up)

9. Move the Analyze (or Translate or Clean up) window to the left

10. Click on the right pane of the Windows Explorer window

11. Press Ctrl+A to select all documents

12. Drag and drop all documents to the Files to Analyze window in Trados. (You can see the trail of the drag and drop movement in this screenshot).

13. Click Analyze (or Translate or Clean up) on Trados. Done!

1 What does CompleteWordCount do?

2 Why doesn't Microsoft Word give me an accurate word count?

Word does not give you a full word count of your document.

Microsoft Word includes a built-in word counter. But it is not always accurate. It does not give you a count of all the words in your document. It doesn't count words in headers or footers, or, importantly, in diagrams made up of text boxes, autoshapes and other Word elements. Only in later versions of Word can you get Word to include footnotes and endnotes in its count. Earlier versions of Word don't count words in footnotes or endnotes.
3 How to install CompleteWordCount

1. In Word, choose Tools > Options > File Locations.
2. Note the Startup folder.
3. Exit Word.
4. Click the Download button on this page. Save the Zip file to your hard drive.

Try translating medium wine into Greek. In all Greek wine classifications there exists no general notion for medium. It will either be medium sweet (ημίγλυκο) or medium dry (ημίξηρο). So, unless in fact medium dry wine is meant by medium wine, then there is a lexical gap for Greek as you cannot say μεσαίο κρασί (medium size would be implied), nor κρασί ντεμί (no Google hits for this).

Difficulty: Both low and high. High as the translations of the unfinished phrases and the dictionary must be made according to the widest possible application and be as grammatically correct as possible given that the whole structure was based on the English language. Also, devising a phonetic system for the lay (non-linguist) English speaking person is a major challenge given that there is no such standard. Moreover both translations and phonetic transcriptions must comply to a 60 character limit. Easy, because there is hardly any terminology or difficult in syntax.

Trados error at clean up: Word could not convert the document due to an OLE/COM or file name error

You try to clean up your document with Trados and you get this.

Solutions:

1. Save word doc as rtf and try again.
2. Clean up with Wordfast. It worked in all cases I had this problem.
3. Change the file name to something simple, with latin characters and no spaces or other symbols.

Another reason you fail to clean up is because you have not closed the document you are cleaning up.

Deleting duplicate rows and other useful tricks for Excel

There is a free and magical add-on, called Asap utilities. You can even select a sheet in Excel and change case (although it has some problems with non English characters, for example when converting Ç to lowercase and vice versa the cedille is lost) or delete empty leading-trailing spaces (useful in glossary maintenance).

This will flip the selected cells. e.g. if you have selected three cells in one row, containing the number 15, 16 and 17, this utility will reverse the order to
17, 16, 15. This utility works for selections in one row or one column.

Remove all rangenames in your selected range.

This message has bugged me for quite some time. It appeared when I started entering English text and then appeared again when I changed to Greek.

Apparently there is no solution to this apart from getting the Korean proofing tools. One way is by downloading the Korean Language Pack (Office XP). Another is by using Microsoft's Proofing tools CD (I am talking for Office 2003 here). Hint: you can find it as a torrent.

Automatically replace in MetaTexis the English question mark with the Greek one

MetaTexis has this amazing feature whereby one can run any macro when a translation unit is activated or when it closes. The following is an implementation to replace the English question mark in MetaTexis with the Greek question mark following a question to the developer.

1) Add the following Macro (in blue) to the macros in Normal.dot:
a) Press Alt+F8 in Word
b) Select Normal.dot in Macros in. Click on one of the existing macros.
c) Click Edit.
d) Paste the macro below an End Sub statement.

How can you do this in other CAT tools?

Trados

Pretranslate the document checking Segment unknown sentences. And then run find/replace. Only the target text will be replaced. The disadvantage with pretranslated text is that fuzzy matches will not be inserted automatically and you will have to use the Get translation button (or if you have Trados 7, Alt+Shift+Insert). Déjà Vu

Simply find/replace in target text once you pretranslated the document and replaced unknown target segments with source segments.

MetaTexis workflow - modified

This is a modified workflow than the one suggested by the developer including information on disabling other CAT tools to avoid conflicts, shortcut optimization and export of files, TMs and terminology databases.

1. Launch Word. If you have Trados or Wordfast disable them. Go to Tools | Templates and Add-ins and uncheck Trados6.dot, MultitermIX.dot, Wordfast.dot. (if they exist). If you have a different Trados or Multiterm version their names will differ accordingly. This means that they will be disabled for the current Word session.

2. Open file with Word. For html files use Alt+O. For Excel and PowerPoint use MetaTexis | Microsoft Office | Import Excel file or Import PowerPoint file.

3. Launch start assistant either by pressing Alt+Shift+S or Alt+Down.

4. At step 2 choose source and target language.

5. At step 3 create or select a translation memory (TM – extension .mxa).

6. At step 4 create or select a terminology database (TDB – extension .mxt). TMs and TDBs are saved by default in these folders, but I advise you to save your dbs in the same folder (or subfolder) as each translation project (for easy transfer of dbs and files to other machines).

7. At step 5 enter personal data of the translator.

8. At step 6 you decide which action you want executed. Click Finished.

At this point you may select to pretranslate the document if you already have a TM with similar material.

9. Press Alt+Down to open a TU and translate. If you have a fuzzy match, place the cursor in the TU, edit it, press Alt+Shift+Enter to set it or click on the toolbar, and then press Alt+Down to move to next unit.
To ease the workflow do this: assign to Alt+Down the function Select translation and open next TU. To do this: Go to the General options, select the Shortcuts tab, click button Default, then click OK. The command Select translation and open next TU should now have a shortcut. To change the shortcut, just double click the item in the shortcut list. In order to simply move to the next unit without closing you could assign the shortcut Open next TU to Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Down; in effect this is a reversal of the two shortcuts and their respective functions.

10. If you want to move to the previous unit press Alt+Up.

11. Each time an un-translated segment is opened, the TM and the TDB will be searched automatically (by default).

12. If you want to search the TM: select source term and click Alt+Ctrl+T,or select target term and click Alt+Ctrl+Shift+T.

13. If you want to search the TDB: select source term and click Alt+Ctrl+G,or select target term and click Alt+Ctrl+Shift+G.

14. If you want to add a term to the TDB press Alt+Shift+N or select source word, press Alt+Shift+J, then select target word, press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+J, a dialog appears with these words, click Enter and they are saved.

15. If you have made manual edits to the document (without opening TUs) click Alt+Ctrl+Shift+F to save all TUs in main database or when you clean up check the Update Memory box (normally checked by default).

16. When you are finished click Alt+Ctrl+Shift+F to clean the document. (If you want to create a Trados version click on the Trados checkbox.) A clean document is created with the string “[Final Version]” added to the filename.

17. Rename the file to something more appropriate (i.e. “…_el.doc”) and deliver it to the client. If the they want Trados files deliver those as well. If they want the TM, go to MetaTexis, Import/Export, Import/Export TMs, select TMX, select TMX version 1.4 and export. This TM can be easily imported to any CAT tool.

Importing a glossary from Excel to Trados Multiterm via MultiTerm Convert

Applicable to MultiTerm versions 2007 or earlier. A slightly different procedure is required with MultiTerm 2009 at the point when one imports the entries - Read here the modified procedure, slideshow included.

Trados instructions appear overwhelming to you with the multitude of options? You have tried to import your favourite, two-column dictionary and failed? Read on, it is easier than it seems; although not half as easy as in other CAT tools like DVX, Wordfast or MetaTexis.

Preparing the glossary in Excel

1. Termbase definition. Use a predefined termbase template: Bilingual glossary
2. Termbase Name. Enter name.
3. Index fields. Remove German. Add Greek.
4. Descriptive fields. Leave as is. Next.
5. Entry structure. Leave as is. Next.
6. Wizard Complete. Finish.

Importing entries

Termbase/Import entries: Termbase Catalogue. Select default import definition. Press Process.
1. General settings. Import file: the xml file you have created. Select Fast import (skip to screen 7).
7. Import definition summary. Next.
8. Processing the import. Next. Wizard Complete. Finish. Close Termbase Catalogue.

Trados, Word and Concordance screen layout for full visibility during workflow

In order not to continuously alternate windows (with the Alt+Tab shortcut or with mouse clicking) you can arrange these three windows horizontally on your screen.

Below you can find a screenshot of a proposed arrangement so that you have full view of Word, Translator's Workbench and Concordance. A 1024x768 screen resolution was used. Higher resolutions can give you more space and lower resolutions can hardly support this layout.

You have to manually resize each window and move it to the appropriate location.

Convert excel files to Multiterm 5

The Converter macro available at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cat_conv/ (developed by Sergei Mouraview) and from this page too, automates the process of converting Excel glossaries into a Multiterm import file. It is fast and FREE.

You define columns exactly as you want records defined in your Multiterm database and the macro handles the rest.

Multiterm has the ability to handle duplicates on import.

How it works

Preparing the glossary in Excel

First column is English, second is Greek
Make sure there are no empty cells in your file
In the first cell of the first column you type Seg L=EN-US
In the first cell of the second column Seg L=EL
Close your glossary
Click on Twb.xls
Open your glossary
Select the two columns
Go to Excel -> Tools -> Export to TWB Memory

A text file is generated in the same folder. You import it to Trados.

Translate ttx files in your favourite translation memory tool

Thanks to Jost Zetzsche and his toolkit, I discovered a new trick to do this. So far I would do it with MetaTexis which imports ttx files or tag the original (non ttx) file with another utility like Rainbow localization tools, or create a custom macro to do the tagging for special file formats.

So even if you do not own MetaTexis you can use a nice little tool, TTXpress, which will allow you to translate in Word with your favourite CAT tool.

TTXpress is a two-button toolbar that allows you to open TRADOS TagEditor files directly in Word. You can proceed with translation using your CAT tool of choice and then save as bilingual TRADOS TagEditor, as needed. These functions require that TRADOS TagEditor is installed on your PC.

If you stick to the following workflow (step 1 applies if you are creating your own source TTX and not receiving directly in this format), you should be able to work without problems:

1. (Open your .txt, .qsc, .isc, .sgm, etc file in TagEditor. Click Save. Close the file.)
2. In Word, click Open TTX as RTF on the TTXpress toolbar. You may see the screen flicker, as the conversion process actually opens the file twice.
3. Translate. Save the RTF.
4. Click Save RTF As TTX. Again you may see the screen flicker. A dialog box reports the location and name of the saved TTX file.

Paste Unformatted Macro - Copy easily from Trados Concordance into Word

Problem:
Whenever you copy text from, say, the Web, and try to paste it into a Word doc, or, specifically to an open segment of Trados, Wordfast, Metatexis, etc, Microsoft Word retains the format of the text and wrecks your segment (This is especially true with Trados, even in case you copy the search results of a Concordance search)!

You can select Paste Special from the edit menu instead of Ctrl+V or if you have Word XP you can select the appropriate option from the smart tag that appears after the paste (not applicable when working within a segment created by a translation memory application), but it is all rather cumbersome.

Solution:
Like so many annoying things of Office, a little macro can solve this idiosyncrasy. Start Word and bring up Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) by pressing Alt+F8 or clicking Tools > Macro > Macros. Type a macro name in the box, say, PasteUnformatted, and click Create.

The Microsoft Visual Basic Editor will appear with the following lines:

Now, you need to tell Word to run that macro every time you press Ctrl-V or, if you want to retain Ctrl-V as it is you can use Alt+V (my favourite) or Ctrl+Alt+V (Do not use Ctrl+Shift+V because it is the default shortcut for pasting formatting).

• Click Tools > Customize.
• Make sure Save In shows normal.dot among the file types and click the Keyboard button.
• In the Categories box, pick Macros.
• In the Macros box, choose your macro (in this case, PasteUnformatted).
• Click inside the Press new shortcut key box and hit Ctrl-V or Ctrl+Alt+V.
• Click Assign.

You're done! From now on, every time you press Ctrl-V or Ctrl+Alt+V, you can paste the contents of the clipboard into Word, Excel, Outlook, Trados, Wordfast, Metatexis etc. without any formatting.

Είναι η γνωστή εσφαλμένη αντίληψη που αφορά ασιατικές γλώσσες και μας έδωσε τέτοια μαργαριτάρια όπως χάθα γιόγκα.

Ως.... άγνωστον, σε αυτές τις γλώσσες δεν υπάρχει ήχος "θ" και όπου βλέπει κανείς τη μεταγραφή th (π.χ. hatha) πρέπει να διαβάσει σκέτο "τ" (άντε το πολύ δασυνόμενο για να πιάσει κάπως την προφορά). Αντίστοιχα όταν βλέπει κανείς ph, δεν είναι "φ" αλλά "π" δασυνόμενο.

Specializations

Spiros Doikas specializes in software and web site localization. He started off as a literary translator and has translated a dozen books on literature and Eastern Philosophy. Some of them have been published by his ex-publishing house Afaton. One of them has been donated to Gutenberg project (Όραμα και Μεταμόρφωση - Vision and Transformation by Sangharakshita).
